Neck and neck with 7-Zip
GenZip uses the official 7-Zip 26.05 engine, so its speed is close to 7-Zip’s own 7z.exe. The numbers below are real measurements.
Results at a glance
- Measured cases
- 11
- Median ratio
- 1.06×
- Best ratio
- 0.99×
- Highest ratio
- 1.15×
Ratio = GenZip time / 7z.exe time. Lower is faster; 1× means equal time.
Time for each case
Times are in seconds; lower is faster. Each pair of bars uses its own scale, with the longer time filling the available width. Do not compare bar lengths across cases.

Editing an existing archive
Adding, deleting and renaming files in a 400 MiB archive. GenZip before optimization compared with the beta.
| Case | Before | Beta | Faster |
|---|---|---|---|
| Add files — ZIP | 8.06 | 2.29 | 3.5× |
| Delete files — ZIP | 4.83 | 1.49 | 3.2× |
| Rename — ZIP | 7.94 | 1.47 | 5.4× |
| Add files — 7Z (non-solid) | 3.39 | 1.53 | 2.2× |
| Delete files — 7Z (non-solid) | 3.91 | 1.52 | 2.6× |
| Rename — 7Z (non-solid) | 4.96 | 1.53 | 3.2× |
Temporary space used while editing dropped from 800 MiB to 400 MiB.
When editing, GenZip finishes writing and flushes the data to disk before replacing the original. If something fails, you cancel, or the app is closed abruptly, the original stays intact. Because of this safety step, editing a 400 MiB archive is still 1–2 seconds slower than 7z.exe.
Methodology
Each measurement is the median of 3 runs at compression level 5. The GenZip release build (7z.dll running in a child process, as in the real app) is compared with the 7z.exe command line, using the same 7-Zip 26.05 engine, alternated, with the engine warmed up.
- Data sets
- Large: 2 files, 512 MiB in total (half text, half random data). Small: 20,000 text files of 1–8 KB (107 MB) in 350 folders.
